Deploying memoQ using Active Directory group policies
This section describes how you can deploy memoQ on multiple computers using Active Directory group policies. This document assumes that you are familiar with administering Active Directory and group policies.
Before you can deploy memoQ, you need at least one Active Directory domain in your network. The domain must include all computers where you want to install memoQ because Active Directory-based group policies do not work on client computers that are not members of the same domain or one of the domains in the same forest.
To set up the group policies on Active Directory, follow the steps below. Note that the steps and the screenshots come from Windows Server 2008, but the procedure is largely the same on Windows Server 2012.
Set up the silent-mode memoQ installer for your target computers: fill in the parameters in the answer file with the appropriate values. Have a folder ready where all three files are present (see section 4).
On one of the domain controllers or a computer where the domain administration tools are installed, run the Active Directory Users and Computers program (from Administrative Tools), and connect to the domain where the target computers are. To run Active Directory Users and Computers, click the Start button, and type dsa.msc in the search box, then press Enter.
Create an organizational unit (OU) in the domain for those computers that need memoQ. From the default Computers container in the domain, move the target computers in the new organizational unit. Note that the default domain policies will still be valid for the new organizational unit.
Start the Group Policy Management program, and create a new group policy object (GPO). Link the new GPO to the organizational unit that you created in Step 2.
Use the Group Policy Management editor (right-click the GPO in Group Policy Management, and choose Edit) to edit the settings in the new group policy object. Find the Startup Scripts section:
You can set up the memoQ installer as a startup script in your group policy object.
Note: You cannot deploy memoQ using Software Settings because Software Settings can deploy single-file .msi installers only.
In the Group Policy Management Editor, double-click the Startup item in the right pane. In the Startup properties dialog box, click Show files. A Windows Explorer window appears with the \Machine\Scripts\Startup folder within your group policy object.
You must select an executable file from this folder. First, you need to copy all three memoQ installation files to this folder: in Windows Explorer, open the folder you created in Step 1, select all files, and press Ctrl+C. Then, return the Open dialog box displayed from the Startup properties dialog box, and simply paste the files into it:
Close this window, and return to the Startup Properties dialog box. In this dialog box, click Add. An Open dialog box appears where the three memoQ installation files are already present. Double-click memoQ2013SilentSetup.n.exe. This is what you will see:
Click OK, and close both the Group Policy Management Editor and the Group Policy Management windows.
The group policy is now operational for computers in the new organizational unit. Next time a target computer is started, its copy of Windows will connect to the domain (more precisely, the nearest domain controller in the domain), and retrieve the new group policy object. Based on the group policy, Windows will connect to the SYSVOL folder on the domain controller, and download all three memoQ installation files. Windows then runs the silent-mode installer before the user logs on.
Note: memoQ installation might still be running when the user logs on. It is recommended to wait 30-60 seconds after the memoQ icon appears on the desktop.
