8. Creating and deploying a virtual image of memoQ

You can set up a virtual image from an installed copy of memoQ, and distribute the image throughout your organization. A virtual image can be a full virtual machine (or a virtual hard disk), or a thin virtual application image. memoQ supports both methods.

Note: A thin virtual application image is practically a small virtual machine environment that consists the distributed application only, and its purpose is to isolate the application from the rest of the system, and facilitate the distribution of the initial installation and also the updates.

If you distribute memoQ using full virtual machine images, all you need to do is set up a virtual machine, and install memoQ on it. Do not activate memoQ: each target system needs to activate memoQ individually.

If you distribute memoQ by thin virtual application images (for example, using VMWare ThinApp), your system will be scanned before and after the application is installed. To create the application image, follow the steps below:

1. Set up a clean Windows environment, preferably on a virtual machine. Install all updates necessary.

   Note that you might need to create a separate environment for all different target platforms.

2. Download the memoQ installation package, and save it on the clean Windows environment. (You do not need the silent installer this time.)

3. Use the application virtualizer to scan your system before memoQ is installed.

4. Install, but do not activate memoQ.

5. Use the application virtualizer to scan your system after memoQ is installed.

   Note: In VMWare ThinApp, you need to choose to store the sandbox folder in the user profile. With different settings, the image will not be able to start.

6. Use the application virtualizer to create the package to be distributed. For example, VMWare ThinApp can create a Windows Installer (.msi) package to be deployed from shared folders or network management systems such as Active Directory Domain Services, Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager, or LANDesk.
